The Ultimate Sandcastle Showdown

It’s a perfect day at the beach, and the friendly competition has begun! Everyone is racing to build the most impressive sandcastle before the tide rolls in. In Sandcastles, you’ll stack sandy towers, line up rows of windows, connect colorful starfish, and decorate your masterpiece with buckets, shells, and shovels. As birds soar across the sky tiles at the top of your castle, your creation slowly comes to life, piece by piece.

Each turn, a tile is revealed and you decide whether to keep it or let it pass to someone else. Once you take a tile, you add it to your castle, carefully placing it to earn the most points by the end of the game. Over 15 quick rounds, your castle fills out piece by piece. Plan ahead, grab the right tiles at the right time, and build the best sandcastle on the beach.

A delightful tile-placement game

Sandcastles is a delightful tile-placement game for the entire family. My wife and I enjoyed the press-your-luck aspect of either taking a tile or passing it on to hopefully get a better one with the next flip. Solid fun.

Great game to relax to!

We really enjoyed Sandcastles. Strategy is very light, all you have to do is draw a tile and place a tile. The scoring is where the game shines with many ways to earn points!

Fun summer tile laying with neat drafting mechanic

Overall, Sandcastles is quick and fun! Do you take the known tile, or pass hoping for something better? Do you play your tiles horizontally to go for the windows or stack them more in hopes of lining up the starfish? There are enough tiles that you can’t really predict what you’ll get. Light decisions, but ones that still end up mattering. I also love the fun beach theme and how easy it would be to teach.

It accommodates 2-6 players, presumably with the tile picking mechanic playing a bigger factor the more players you have. I hope to find a time to play with a higher player count, but definitely enjoyed it with our 3!

Since every type of icon scores differently, often with non-intuitive scales, I wish there were a way to streamline scoring a bit, at least for the windows. I’m not sure if individual scorepads or maybe player aids would make it faster? Don’t get me wrong, I’m happy to have a variety of scoring objectives! They make the game entertaining and engaging.

Game gifted for review, but all thoughts are my own.
